Head to the Macedon Ranges if your dream is a country estate with cool climate charm. There really is nowhere like it for both beauty and value for money.
Grand History
In the 19th century Melbourne’s elite built grand estates in the Macedon Ranges. Surrounded by park-like grounds they provided relief from the summer heat and were a prized status symbol. Today Macedon is still prized by people seeking a cool climate escape. Charming villages like Woodend, Kyneton and Mount Macedon serve up wonderful food, wine and art. Natural beauty is everywhere.
Country Dream
Beverly Higgs is living the country dream with her dogs and horses. A keen equestrian, and fourth-generation Woodend resident, Beverly is also a Director at RT Edgar in Woodend. After a slow few years, she says the local market is picking up with more people heading to the Macedon Ranges for their country escape: “Melbourne tree-changers are returning, mostly retirees and young families wanting space and community connection. We are also seeing buyers from interstate, especially those priced out of the Southern Highlands, near Sydney.”
Value for Money
Beverly says the most coveted real estate is around the northern foothills of Mount Macedon. Other high-end pockets include Woodend and Kyneton. And, compared to other regions she says there is great value for money in the prestige market: $2 million is entry level price and will buy a good home on 10 acres; $3 million secures an architecturally designed residence with established garden at Mount Macedon; and $5 million is enough to purchase that grand country estate.
